~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We open in the conference room of an Inventors Seminar. As the meeting breaks up, Ray Dallion approaches one of the men and asks for a light. The man comments on the unique pipe Ray has. As Ray loads his pipe, from an uncle he says, he talks to the younger man, telling him he looks for people such as him to represent. Ray knows the man is on to some big invention. The man gives in and tells Ray about his plans for a new gun that is like a miniature guided missile. Ray is impressed. Ray mentions a partnership to the man, but as he lights his pipe, red smoke comes out and surrounds the young man, deforming his flesh and causing him intense pain until he simply vanishes. Ray watches, then takes the missile plans and leaves.
Curse has to make the poor guy suffer first. Egad.
At a later date, we see Ray giving a demonstration of the weapon to some potential buyers. The head of the firm, Mr. Clemens, is impressed and hires Ray, telling him the gun is going to be manufactured immediately. One of Clemens' subordinates, John York, is unimpressed and resentful of Ray's success.
That night, Ray comes home with flowers for his girlfriend Connie. She wonders if he spent the rent money on them. Ray tells her he is sick of them living so poorly and promises she is going to get so much more.
Ray will do anything for Connie. Or is it for himself?
At Curious Goods, Micki comes in and brings the mail, including an invitation for Ryan from his dad, Ray, and Connie. Ryan tosses it but Micki fishes it out and asks why he'd just ignore it. Ryan says he doesn't get along with his dad and is tired of feeling like a disappoint to the man. Micki says that maybe it is time to try and make peace. Ryan is unsure, but Micki keeps on him. He relents, on the condition that Micki is his guest.
Ryan relents, but Micki has to be his Plus One!
Ryan and Micki arrive at the address on the invitation and Ryan is surprised his father could afford a house like this. Ray opens the door and is surprised to see his son, asking why he is there. Ryan mentions the invitation, but Connie appears and tells them that she is the one who invited him, and invites them into the house. Ryan introduces Micki as cousin Catherine's daughter.
Connie tells Ray she invited Ryan because it was time they buried the hatchet. She tells Ray to take Ryan to the factory and show him around. When Ryan says he'd like to see it, Ray reluctantly agrees. Connie and Micki bond over wedding planning.
Damned ugly antique. And this one has just been biding its time.
At the factory, Ray tells Ryan about the weapon he says he designed. Ryan make a comment but Ray overreacts, saying this is serious business and that there are people in the business that would like to see him fail, or worse. John York comes up, asking to speak to Ray, but says he'll meet him later. Ray tells Ryan the man wants to be like him.
Ray tells Ryan that even though his father died when he was born, Ray did have someone to look up to, his Uncle Lewis Vendredi. Ryan is understandably shocked to hear this. Ray relates how he cut his throat accidentally as a boy and Lewis saved his life, apparently by magic. Ray says that even though Lewis was dirt poor, he loved the old man. He always wondered how Lewis suddenly went from a poor shop owner to a rich man and swears he will do the same.
At the house, Micki is helping Connie with chores and accidentally drops a box. A photo album falls out and Micki looks through. She comments on a picture and Connie says it is of Ray and his Uncle Lewis. She tells Micki how the man was the only person to give Ray a Christmas present when he was a child. Micki asks if Lewis ever gave him anything in later years, Connie mentions the pipe.
Huh. An Uncle Lewis Christmas card. Weird.
Back at the factory, Ray is telling Ryan about the weapons they sell and then shows Ryan his invention, the one he stole after the pipe killed the true inventor. Ryan sees how it works, but is surprised his father invented such a deadly weapon. Ray thinks Ryan just has trouble believing his father is smart enough. He wants Ryan to try the weapon, but Ryan scoffs. Ray berates him, calling him "artistic" and wondering why he dropped out of college to run an old antique store. He wants Ryan to come work for him and says how Uncle Lewis would want it, too. Ryan snaps and tells his father about what Lewis did at the store and what him and Micki are going through to get the cursed antiques back. Ray is shocked, but Ryan tells him to forget it. York appears and tells Ray they need to talk, now. Before he leaves, he tells Ryan he wants to talk more. Micki arrives at the factory, looking for Ryan.
York wants Ray to sign a contract signing over all rights to his weapon to him. Ray scoffs, but York pulls out a file that proves that a man named Fielding is the true inventor and threatens to go to the big boss with the information. He also produces Fielding's brother, who has been searching for his missing brother. The man is unaware that York is using him to pressure Ray. York leaves, telling Ray he better make up his mind. Ray pulls out his pipe and lights it as York watches. The red smoke chases the man down the hallways of the factory, eventually cornering him and deforming him before he vanishes into thin air. Ray just watches, then walks away. Micki hears the man's screams and finds him burning up. She runs for help and finds Ryan, but when they get back, York and the smoke are gone.
Wonder if the smoke smelled of brimstone?
Ray comes over to them and demands to know what Micki saw. She says she saw nothing, she was confused. She leaves, with Ryan following. Ray watches them go. Later, in his office, Ray decides to lock the pipe in his desk.
At the house, Micki comes into Ryan's room and asks Ryan about his father. Ryan says he feels like a kid again, wishing the man would see him as an adult, as who he is as a man. Ryan says it got worse when he younger brother died, his father dragged him and his mother from town to town, trying to hit on some big success. Micki listens, then tells Ryan she knows what she saw, the man was dying in a cloud of red smoke.
And the mentions the pipe Connie said Lewis gave him. Ryan doesn't want to believe it, saying his father would never use a cursed object. Micki relents, telling him she will back of her search for the pipe.
In their room, Ray tells Connie he wants Ryan and Micki gone, he doesn't want them there. He has too much to concentrate on between his presentation tomorrow and the wedding. He snaps at her and she cries. Ray realizes how far he went and begs her to forgive him. Connie says he has changed since he has been working on this weapon. He says it is just the pressure. Micki goes downstairs and calls Jack. She asks him if he knows about a pipe.
Ryan and Micki help Connie set up the house for the wedding. Ray catches Micki looking in the hutch and wants to know what she is searching for. Micki covers and then the doorbell rings. Jack arrives, saying he wanted a break and to meet Ryan's father. Ryan introduces Jack to Ray, who is surprised Jack was a friend of Lewis'. Jack says he is also a friend of Ryan's, and tells the man how he owes his life to his son. Jack then meets Connie, apologizing for crashing the party. Connie puts him to work helping with the wedding. Ray is suspicious.
Later, Jack and Micki talk. He tells her there is a pipe in the manifest and it was never listed as sold. They agree to look for it, but also agree to keep Ryan out of the loop until they are sure.
As Ray gets ready for the wedding, he asks Ryan why he is really here. Ryan says it is just to be there for him and for the wedding. He asks about Micki and Jack and Ryan says they are just here because they are his friends. Ray then asks if what Jack said is true. Ryan says yes, and he also owes his life to Jack. He tells his father he might not believe what they do is true, but it is, and it is dangerous. Ray asks Ryan why he does it. Ryan says it is because of him, because he taught Ryan about right and wrong and about doing for yourself, because no one will do it for you. Ray tells Ryan he was wrong, all this time he has seen Ryan as a boy, but he isn't the little boy he was angry at anymore. Ryan can't find the card key for the factory when Ray tells him to get it. Ray panics, running out to ask Connie where Jack and Micki are. She says they went out for a bite to eat. Ray snaps at Ryan, saying he was stalling him an lying to him. Ray takes off. Ryan asks if Connie can get them into the factory and she runs off to get her car keys.
Ryan and Ray really bonded here,
until Ray accused Ryan of just stalling him.
At the factory, Ray comes upon his boss with some foreign men who are there for the demonstration of Ray's weapon. Ray makes an excuse to head inside, needing to find Micki and Jack. When they hear Ray coming, they hide and when Ray gets the pipe out of the desk, Jack grabs him and Micki grabs the pipe and flees. Ray chases her and him and Jack struggle. Ray tazes Jack, knocking him out cold. He then hides an unconcious Jack behind the targets to be used for the weapon demonstration. Ray goes after Micki.
Clemens and then foreigners arrive and take the free moment to make a toast. Then he begins to show the general the weapon and when the man asks to try it out, Clemens agrees. The man holds the weapon, its sight point at the targets ahead. He blows one up. Connie and Ryan arrive, telling Clemens they are looking for Ray. He doesn't know where Ray is.
Ray comes upon Micki and they struggle. He slugs her and gets the pipe away from her. As he begins to prepare it to light, Micki runs.
At the shooting gallery, Ryan spots Jack behind one of the targets and manages to move the gun up at the last minute, sending debris from the ceiling down onto the general. Ryan rushes over and they wake Jack, who tells them Ray has been using the pipe and Micki is in danger. Ryan and Connie rush off.
Missed Jack by thissssss much.
Micki has locked herself in a storage room and begs Ray to stop, but he lights the pipe anyway. She uses duct tape to try and seal the doorway, but the smoke slowly seeps in. She begins coughing, begging Ray to stop. Ryan arrives and demands the pipe, holding the weapon at his father. Ray gives over the pipe and Ryan wants to know where Micki is. He tells Ray he isn't his son. Ryan rushes to find Micki and the smoke moves from her to him, enveloping him. Ray sees this and is shocked by what he has done, so he pushes Ryan away and the smoke surrounds him instead, burning him before making him vanish before Ryan's eyes.
Ray does the right thing, in the end. Poor Ryan.
At the house later, Micki is turning away confused wedding guests. Connie is on the phone with the factory, they haven't seen Ray. She thinks he has just run off and left her. Micki consoles the sad woman.
Jack finds a mourning Ryan, who asks him why his father got mixed up in all this. Jack tells him Ray probably felt limited in his options, since he was older and feeling like this may be his last chance at success. Ryan says he didn't know his father at all, but Micki says he did. And Jack reminds Ryan that his father renounced the cursed antique in the end, since he loved his son too much to let him die. As Micki embraces him, Ryan breaks down.
Micki and Ryan console a grieving Ryan.
My thoughts:
A wonderful episode! We get some more insight into Ryan's past. Not only do we meet his father, but we get to see the strain that his younger brother's death put on their family and their relationship. Ryan feels like a failure to his father and Ray sees Ryan as a reminder of the son he lost.
Quite interesting to hear that Ray was a sort of surrogate son for Lewis. It explains why Lewis left part of the store to Ryan. Wish we could have had an episode that explained why he left the other half of the store to Micki. What special connection did he feel to her side of the family?
Constantine is a great choice as Ryan's dad, I think. He is a good actor and him and LeMay play the troubled relationship between father and son well.
One thing I wonder: Does Ray know how the pipe works before he uses it to kill the inventor at the beginning? He has carried it around for awhile and obviously uses it, since he has tobacco and matches. So, did the pipe never activate before because Ray was never in the right situation? Or did Ray use it previously? His lack of success would tell us he hadn't used it prior to this. Maybe Lewis had mentioned something to him about it, but Ray just scoffed and tossed it up to an old man's ramblings. I wonder.
This is yet another episode that shows how much Ryan has changed since he came to inherit the store, how much he has lost to the damned curse. He suffers so much loss due to Uncle Lewis that when he snaps at his father's fawning admiration of the man, it makes sense. Little does Ryan know he has more yet to lose.
Micki is so nice and supportive of Ryan here. She pushes him to attend the wedding and make peace and she helps out with the wedding plans. She also has to push him, a little, when she knows something is up with Ray and the pipe.
Also like how Jack speaks of Ryan, telling Ray that he saved his life. He treats Ryan like the man he knows he is, whereas Ray treats him disdainfully, as a disappointed parent. But, in the end, Jack also is able to give Ryan some comfort when he explains how trapped his father must have felt. The trio has become good friends and this episode clearly shows how much they have come to care for each other.
A truck pulls up to a lighthouse at night and its occupants make out a bit before heading inside. The woman asks if the man lives here all alone, he says yes. They head up to check out the view from the light, the man secretly bringing a knife with him. He turns the old foghorn and then the woman notices an old boat in the water. He says he sees nothing then stabs the woman, killing her. A shrouded figure in the boat watches. The man then brings the woman's body down to the water, placing her in the dinghy. He appears to recognize the figure in the boat, who proceeds to throw some gold coins into the sand. The man gathers up the coins as the boat drifts back out to sea.
Interesting how this antique aligns itself with a pirate who wants revenge!
The next morning, a man named Dewey Covington calls Curious Goods asking for Jack. Micki tells him Jack is unavailable and asks if she can assist. He says he got their letter about the old foghorn, but he sold it and the man who bought it died last year. Micki asks for directions to his town, Whaler's Point. She tells him they will be on their way. Ryan doesn't seem too keen on the idea of seafood and salt air.
Ryan, I think you protest too much about this seaside town!
Once they are in Whaler's Point, Micki tells Ryan about some of the town's history, including pirates and treasure. They also wonder what the curse on the foghorn could be, before heading into the museum to meet Dewey.
Dewey making his fateful telephone call.
Inside, Micki is enjoying the history of the old town. They meet Dewey and he tells them about what happened to the foghorn. He said the man running the lighthouse now is named Joe Fenton. He then takes them outside and points them the right way. Barney, the town drunk, tells them to avoid the place and tells them about the sordid past of the town and the pirates. Dewey plays off Barney's warnings and Micki and Ryan head off.
Crazy Barney?
At the lighthouse, the pair meet with Fenton, who says he found the old foghorn, but it was obsolete. He says he sold it to some old fellow, but he never got the man's name. Micki and Ryan thank him for his help and leave.
Love the lighthouse shots!
That night, Fenton comes home with yet another woman, but she is here to appraise the gold coins. She examines them and says they are real. Fenton hopes she can help him get good money for them and she says her company can definitely help him get what he deserves.
Later, she says they need to first set up some legal rights for the gold, but Fenton throws a rope around her neck and strangles the woman. Quickly, he turns the foghorn and the figure in the boat appears again. Fenton brings the woman to the shore and tosses her into the dinghy, unaware that old Barney is nearby, drinking and watching the events unfold. Fenton again gathers up the coins as the boat leaves with the body. Barney slowly takes off, unnoticed. Upstairs in the lighthouse, Fenton crosses of yet another name in an old book, saying there is "just one more".
Barney rushes to the museum and wakes Dewey, telling him he saw one of the long-dead pirates at the beach. Dewey scoffs and sends Barney back out into the night. Barney heads to the hotel, wanting someone to believe his tale. Micki and Ryan are having dinner inside, planning what to do next, when Barney comes in, raving about the dead pirate at the lighthouse. The bartender tosses Barney out, but not before he mentions the foghorn. Micki and Ryan race out to find him, but when they get outside, he is gone.
Wonderful.
At the lighthouse, Fenton has one name left to cross off, that of a man named Frederick Williams.
Micki and Ryan have no luck finding Barney. They know they need to get into the lighthouse to see for themselves if the foghorn is there. They decide to get some rest first.
The next morning, they are at the lighthouse and see Fenton. Ryan tells Micki to keep the man busy while he goes inside and checks for the foghorn. Micki asks Fenton more about the foghorn as he works on some lumber. Ryan has trouble getting into the building until he finds an open window. Fenton tells Micki the new foghorn works automatically. He then says he has to go to the house to get his tape measure. Micki asks to go along. Inside, Ryan is searching with no luck. Hearing them coming, he rushes up the stairs. Fenton goes inside, but keeps Micki out. Ryan goes out to the top deck and hangs himself over the side to hide from Fenton, who is supsicious of the whereabouts of Micki's friend. He doesn't spot him, so he leaves, heading back to his work, Micki following. Ryan pulls himself back onto the deck.
Best hiding place, Ryan?
Micki sees Ryan wave to her, so she takes her leave of Fenton. Ryan tells her he had no luck with the search. The two then ponder what is going on. Micki wonders if the man in the boat could be the same one Dewey sold the foghorn to, but Ryan scoffs, saying that would mean the man has been dead three centuries. They decide to find Barney and find out what he really saw. Later, they make their way over rocks to a cove. Ryan spots something on the shore and picks up a gold coin.
Could have been a Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew story!
Micki and Ryan and the Curse of Whaler's Point.
At the lighthouse, Barney bangs on the door, then pushes his way in, telling Fenton he knows he is dealing with long-dead Angus McBride and he wants to know where the gold is. Fenton says he has something to show him, opening the old log from McBride's ship. It is the book with the names crossed off. Fenton says Barney is a relative of one of the old crew and shows him one of the coins. He then takes the old man up to the top of the lighthouse, saying they need to call McBride. He turns the foghorn and the boat appears again. Barney is excited and heads down with Fenton. At the boat, Barney introduces himself to McBride and demands his share of the gold. Behind him, an axe is raised and Fenton kills the old man. He tells the shrouded figure Barney is the last one, but the pirate says there is one more. He takes the body and sails off as Fenton demands to know who the last person is. He gets no answer.
Very spooky scenes at the beach at night.
At the museum, Dewey examines the coin, saying it looks new, as if it was just made. But it appears to be a real coin from the treasure of McBride. He shows them a book that is a history of McBride's ship. The coin matches the one in the book. The phone rings and he answers as Micki and Ryan look at the book and begin to put the pieces together. Micki asks Dewey if the missing women could be the descendants of the crew. Dewey is amazed to find that it appears to be true. Ryan asks about Barney and Dewey tells him where he might be. Micki heads to the hall of records to check the relationships of the women and the pirates. After they leave, Dewey realizes Barney is also a relation.
Seaside air is not a friend to Micki's hair!
At the lighthouse, Fenton works to find out who the last person he needs to kill is, but has no luck.
Ryan enters the cave on the beach, searching for Barney and is spooked by bats. Meanwhile, Micki comes across some interesting information at the hall of records. As she goes to leave, Fenton arrives. She hides and slips out before he notices her.
In the cave, Ryan uses a lantern to search for the old drunk, going deeper and deeper into the dark. Fenton finds the book Micki was reading and appears to have come across the name he needs. Micki rushes to the museum, but it is closed and locked.
In the cave, Ryan finds Barney, but is shocked that the man is dead. Falling back, he finds the bodies off all the missing women. He gets up and rushes out.
Great scream!
Fenton arrives and finds the museum locked, as well. Micki rushes toward the beach and finds Dewey. He says he is looking for Barney, but she tells him that she found out his real mother died when he was very young and that the Covington's adopted him. He is also one of the descendants and that, whatever is going on, he is next in line. Dewey is shocked. He tells her that McBride's Curse is that he would avenge his death. Micki tells him the foghorn is related to all of this and they need to get it back. He goes toward the lighthouse, but Micki stops him, saying the curse won't affect her. He says he will keep looking for Barney while she goes to the lighthouse. Micki finds the same window Ryan did and pulls herself inside that way.
Fenton arrives back at the light and notices a flashlight move in the window. At the cave, Ryan comes face to face with the shrouded ghost of McBride and screams.
300 years will do that to a pirate!
Fenton comes in and confronts Micki. She says she is there to talk to him, but he doesn't believe her. He pulls a sword and she hides, then Dewey comes in and tells her to run. The two men struggle and Dewey stands in front of Micki to protect her just as Fenton runs him through with the sword. Micki rushes off as Dewey dies.
You killed your brother, prepare to die!
Ryan is trying to escape the cave and the ghost, but appears to be trapped, just when the foghorn goes off and the ghost leaves, heeding its call. Ryan grabs his lantern and follows.
On the beach, Micki stumbles about as Ryan rushes up. She tells him about Dewey and he tells her what he found in the cave. She tells him Fenton uses the horn to summon McBride. On the beach, Fenton dumps Dewey into the boat, saying that the man is the last one, there are no more descendants. The ghost says no, there is one more. He demands to know who the other person is, as the ghost raises his hooked hand towards him.
Fenton has about had it with this misleading ghost pirate!
Micki and Ryan again search the lighthouse and finally, up on the top deck, Ryan finds it, wrapped in canvas. They take it and flee.
Fenton rushes away from the ghost and into the lighthouse, struggling with Ryan over the antique. Just then, the door breaks open, the ghost forcing his way inside. The spirit pulls Fenton toward him and then skewers the man with his hooked hand, carrying him along as he leaves.
Turnout is fair play, right Fenton?
Back at Curious Goods, Micki is crying as Ryan comes down. Ryan says Dewey was a good man. Micki says that Dewey cared about Barney, a drunk no one else worried about, and he saved her life, too. Ryan shows her something he found in the record book. Seems that Joe Fenton was also adopted, by a different couple. Seems like Dewey and Fenton were brothers. Micki and Ryan head upstairs, but she stops and tosses the gold coin on the desk.
Back at Whaler's Point, we see an old pirate ship at sea as a foghorn goes off in the distance.
The end?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

My thoughts:

Wow. A lot of detail in that write up! But it is a detail filled episode! Even without Jack, wherever he is this week.

Awesome that the show did a pirate/curse episode and set it in a seaside town. And even though Ryan says he isn't looking forward to the trip, he has a nautical sweater on for almost the entire time!

Love the outdoor scenes here, some of them are just beautiful, yet also keep with the vibe of the show. You can feel the damp, dank, coldness in the air.

Funny that the pirate keeps stringing Fenton along. First there is this many to kill, then one more, then, oh wait... YOU are the last one! Tricked ya!

Did think it was kind of funny how Fenton didn't notice Ryan on the deck of the lighthouse when his fingers holding on were clearly visible.  And how Dewey was the man in charge of the museum and apparently well versed in town lore, but Micki is the one who, after not much time in the local hall of records, stumbles across the fact that Dewey was adopted. Ah well, small things.

Also like the Crazy Ralph-like figure Barney is, although he is definitely more well liked in town, especially by Dewey.

I wonder where this lighthouse is located? I am assuming in Canada, will have to check and see if any other F13:TS sites ever pinpointed it.

All in all, I like this one, from the seaside setting to the curse of the pirate, a great, spooky episode for a late night scare!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We open at night in a townhouse apartment. Winston Knight, a newscaster, plays a video tape of one of his previous newscasts. He then takes an antique camera out of its hiding place and sets it up. After taking a picture, he heads to his darkroom to develop it. Instead of a photo, however, the picture develops into a humanoid creature. Knight is thrilled as the thing emerges. Later, we see Knight addressing the creature - now human and dressed - and giving it orders to call him later. He gives the man plastic gloves and a machete.
Knight really enjoys making doubles of himself.
Ryan and his date, Cathy, are taking pictures in a photo booth, having fun. Ryan grabs the photos and runs, as Cathy playfully chases him.
At the news studio, the make-up lady is asking Knight if she thinks the killer will call him again tonight. He says he has no idea.
Ryan and Cathy are walking home and we see the man who Knight sent out following a woman down a nearly deserted street. She begins to panic and hurry, but when she runs into the man, she is relieved when she recognizes him. She goes with him, willingly.
Cute couple. Like seeing Ryan smile!
Ryan is dropping his date off and tries to go up with her, but she has to get up early. Cathy tears the photo strip in half, keeping part and giving him the other, before kissing him good-night. Ryan leaves with a smile on his face.
The woman is walking with the man, feeling safe with him, when he pulls the machete and attacks her. She screams and Ryan hears and is nearly attacked by the man himself. The man gets away and Ryan finds the woman, dead.
Knight is doing is his newscast on the air live when the other man calls him from a phone booth. He tells Knight where to find the latest body. Knight tries to get more info, but the man hangs up. We then see the man watching Knight's newscast in front of a store full of televisions. When he turns around, we see he looks identical to Winston Knight himself.
After completing their task, their doubles wander around, Creepy.
At the station, Knight ends his newscast and his producer, Phil, expresses his glee over the ratings since the killer has been calling, saying that Knight was almost washed-up before this turn of events. Alone, Knight takes out the photo proof from the cursed camera and lights it on fire. As he does, the duplicate version of himself also burns to ash.
The cops are in Cathy's apartment, interviewing Ryan about the murder. Ryan says the man he saw was Winston Knight, but the cop says Knight was on air at the time of the killing. The cop thinks Ryan made a mistake, but Ryan sticks by what he saw. Ryan tells the cop to call Knight and ask him if the killer ever said he looked like him. The cop calls and tells Knight there is an eyewitness. Knight wants to know who it is. The cop tells him, off the record, that the man is Ryan Dallion. Knight then says he has no brother, twin or otherwise. The cop leaves, telling Ryan to call him if he thinks of anything else. Ryan gets Knight's number off the pad and apologizes for getting Cathy involved in all of this. She kisses him and tells him to call her later.
At Curious Goods, Ryan has woken Jack and Micki to tell them about the night's events. Micki says she watched the newscast and saw Knight get the call from the killer. Ryan says there has to be some explanation. Jack scoffs at the thought of a cursed item being involved, saying he would have noticed Knight's name in the Manifest. Micki says they should all get some sleep. Jack waits, pondering what Ryan said.
Jack and Micki are none too happy to be woken up in the middle of the night.
Ryan has a fitful sleep and gets up and turns on the television, to one of Knight's newscasts. When Knight says several witnesses have identified the killer as Ryan, he freaks out and hits the TV, but a hand breaks through the screen and grabs Ryan, trying to pull him in. Ryan then wakes up in bed, realizing it was just a nightmare.
Sheesh, Ryan isn't safe in his dreams, either.
The next day, Ryan is fixing his tie when Micki comes down. Ryan says he is going to meet Knight at his place at 5:00 to talk about the killer. Micki wishes she could go, but Ryan says Cathy is going with him.
Back in his darkroom, Knight is making yet another duplicate creature from the cursed camera. Later, he again arms the double with a machete. When Ryan and Cathy arrive, Knight hides the look-alike in the darkroom. Knight greets Ryan and Cathy and lets them inside. Cathy says she is a big fan, but Knight plays humble every-man.
Knight says him and Ryan are part of an elite club of two, the only two who have had an interaction with the killer. He thinks they should work together. Ryan has a hard time, amazed at how much Knight resembles the killer. Knight plays it off, instead telling them about the hard time he has had since the killer has been calling him, nightmares and headaches. He says that Ryan's identifying the man looking like him might mean the killer is fixated on Knight maybe even changing his appearance to look like him. Knight then says he has a deadline and ushers Ryan and Cathy out.
As they leave, Cathy is in awe that she met the famous newscaster. Ryan offers to drive Cathy home, but she decides to walk, since she has shopping to do. They kiss before Ryan drives off. Cathy starts to leave, but realizes she left her purse in Knight's apartment. Heading back up, she looks in the window and sees Knight talking to his double. Knight spots her, but she runs off. Knight spots her purse and gives his double her keys. Before she can make a call to the police, the killer startles her. She jumps into a cab, but the double follows.
Knight is anchoring another newscast, which Micki and Ryan are watching at the store. Ryan tells Micki there was something creepy about Knight and that he evaded all Ryan's questions. Jack arrives and said he was thinking all night and searched the manifest for items that might make a copy of someone. He found a camera in the listings, but it was sold to someone named Kahn. However this is not a person, but the news station KAHN. The trio head out.
The cab drops Cathy at home and she uses the key under the mat to get inside her apartment. She calls Curious Goods, but the machine picks up. She leaves Ryan a message about what she saw in the window. She says she is scared. The television then turns on and she sees the double, with her keys. He draws his machete as she throws items at him. She hides, but he uses the weapon to break the door and then he attacks as Knight's newscast plays on the screen.
Love the long shots of the inside of the store!
Later, back at the store, Jack and Ryan discuss how Knight could have stolen the camera from the studio after they purchased it. Micki hits the play button on the machine and they hear Cathy's message. Ryan realizes she is in danger and him and Jack rush out.
At Cathy's apartment, they find the cops outside and Cathy's murdered body inside. The detective says he needs a statement, but Jack tells him that will have to wait. They leave, Ryan blaming himself for her murder. Jack stops Ryan from telling the cops it was Knight, telling Ryan the man has the perfect alibi and that, yet again, they are on their own.
At Curious Goods, Jack tells Ryan they need to concentrate on getting the camera back. Micki tries to console Ryan but he snaps and rushes out, saying he is going to get Knight.
At the station, Knight is outside, about to burn the photo proof when Ryan accosts him, telling him about Cathy's message. Knight calls him crazy, but Ryan grabs the photo off the ground and takes off, eluding both Knight and a security guard.
Back at the store, Ryan tells Micki and Jack he has the negative. Jack says that he believes that the duplicate has only five hours. If Knight doesn't destroy the negative before then, he dies and the duplicate lives. Ryan says he now has Knight's life in his hands.
In the street, the double is almost run over by a car as it wanders. It has begun to realize it wants to live.
Jack says they have to hold on to the negative and use it blackmail Knight into giving the camera back. Ryan says no, he is going to let Knight die, he doesn't care about the camera. Jack says if he does, then the camera will fall into someone else's hands and the killing will continue. Ryan stops, realizing the truth in Jack's words.
Simple item with a powerful curse attached.
Jack arrives at Knight's apartment and tells him his associates will destroy the negative as soon as Jack comes back with the camera. Knight appears to be playing along, but then he knocks Jack out and takes a photo of him.
Later, we see Jack tied up as Knight gives a phony Jack duplicate a different camera. He tells him to give Micki and Ryan the fake camera, destroy the negative and then to kill them both. Knight tells the real Jack that he is about to commit two murders while tied up. He then says the Jack double will admit to being the machete killer on air. He gags Jack as he tells him how he has it all planned out for Jack's double to outlive Jack and then be killed as the murderer. Knight calls his producer and tells him to get a news crew and to meet him at Curious Goods, where they will capture the killer. The Knight double is watching, through the window. After Knight leaves, the double follows, as Jack struggles to free himself.
At the store, the Jack double arrives with the camera. Micki takes it to the vault as Jack demands the negative from Ryan. As he goes to get it, the fake Jack pulls the phone cord out.
Outside the store, Knight meets up with his producer and crew and tells him that the killer is going to come out of the store a little before 10:00 PM. Phil says they should call the cops, but Knight plays to his greed over ratings and they wait.
Inside, Ryan says they should just wait a few minutes before destroying the negative, but fake Jack insists. Ryan feigns at getting the negative as he poses a trick question to the man about not breaking the camera. The fake Jack falls for it and Ryan attacks him, realizing he isn't Jack. Micki comes in and Ryan tells her this isn't the real Jack. Just then, the Knight double arrives, as well. The two duplicates struggle.
Outside, Knight is beginning his newscast, telling the public they are minutes away from finding out who the machete killer is.
Ack. The duplicates are filled with some weird oozing goop.
Wonder who had to clean that up in the store?
As the two doubles fight, the Knight copy slices off the Jack copy's hand. Fake Jack begins to turn to goop. Fake Knight holds Micki at knife-point, demanding the negative from Ryan. He pretends to hand it over, but instead, stabs the creature in the chest. More goop oozes out and Ryan and Micki escape.
The two rush outside to where Knight is airing his newscast. He pretends that he didn't know anyone was inside. He demands to end the broadcast, but his producer keeps the cameras rolling. His double stumbles out of the store, as well, and Knight demands the negative from him, but the fake Knight crumples it up. The real Winston Knight slowly vanishes as everyone watches. The duplicate is then shocked to see the goop turn to blood as he becomes real. He is happy to be alive, right before he keels over and dies.
What did all these people make of Knight just fading away?
Hell, they had it on camera!
Later, Jack is working with the manifest as Micki comes downstairs. She tells Jack that Ryan is really depressed. Jack says Lewis must have told Knight how the cursed camera worked. He also speculates that the duplicate of Knight would probably have begun to act just like the real Knight, over time. Ryan then comes down and said he realized it isn't the objects that are cursed, they are. Everyone involved with them dies. Micki and Jack tell him that isn't so, Knight was responsible for Cathy's death and the nine others before. Jack adds that if they didn't fight evil, the consequences would be much worse. Ryan looks at his half of the photo strip of him and Cathy and gets angry again over her senseless demise.
My thoughts:
An excellent episode! The cursed item here is a great one with a great twist. Of course, Knight doesn't use his double merely to have fun, it has to take a dark, murderous turn.
Gary Frank is great as the fame-hungry Knight and his dim-witted yet anxious to live duplicates.
Cathy is a fun love interest for Ryan, cute and spunky. Sad that Ryan loses yet another romance to one of the cursed items. You can almost track the hardening of Ryan's soul over time. Sad.
Loved how the duplicates look perfectly human but act just a little bit off. Makes them strangely creepy, in a way.
Also love how Ryan was wary of Jack when he came back. You would notice if Jack started acting weird and Ryan does and uses his brain to trick the double into revealing itself.
Have to wonder what Phil the producer, the news crew and everyone at home thought of what happened outside the store. I mean, really: the real Knight vanishes before their eyes, the fake Knight is bleeding and dies and in the store is a fake, oozing Jack! What did the cops make of all this? We never know, as it is not addressed. We have to assume Jack, Micki and Ryan came up with some sort of believable story to explain it all. Would have loved to hear that one!
Also loved how there is an nod to the executive producer of the show, Frank Mancuso, Jr. When Knight is going to his car outside the station, right before Ryan jumps him, we see the names on two parking spaces. Not sure who "J. Wartlieb" was, but "F. Mancuso, Jr." is pretty obvious. See the pic below!
I like little inside jokes like this. :)
