Firefly

Science Channel has been airing reruns of "Firefly" on Sunday nights. Since this was one of those shows people rave about but that I had never watched. I decided to set the DVR and see what all the fuss was about.

I have been enjoying the episodes just fine, but wasn't totally won over until the episode I watched today, "Safe". Something about the characters, their interaction and the dialogue just pushed the show from 'like' to 'love', in my mind.

I have to say I am sort of glad I knew the show was already cancelled, because I would have been heartbroken had I been in love with it and hoped for more and had the rug ripped out from under me.

Some quotes from this episode:

Kaylee: "Well, we're headed for help... right?"

Zoe: "Captain will come up with a plan."

Kaylee: "That's good. Right?"

Zoe: "Possibly you're not recalling some of his previous plans."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Mal: "Well, look at this! Appears we got here just in the nick of time. Whaddya suppose that makes us?"
Zoe: "Big damn heroes, sir."
Mal: "Ain't we just!"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Simon: "So finally...a decent wound on this ship, and I miss out. I'm sorry."

Mal: "Well, you were busy trying to get yourself lit on fire. It happens."

Can't wait to see the remaining episodes and the movie and to delve into the comics!

  1. you had me worried, i was the same way... but at some point i felt connected to the ideas, and then watched the movie. it is one i wish got the ending... much like terminator: sarah conner chronicles.... poor summer glau, she is the death card to shows she is a regular... i think she needs a hug... i think the cape got cut too.

  2. Jeremy: Would have been too soon for an ending, since they only made so few episodes. Can’t wait to see the movie, though!

  3. Summer is the kiss of death but without her these shows may not have got made in the first place so I am chosing to see her as a good luck charm.

    You described it perfectly Wings - there is a point in this show where everyone realizes they are watching something special. Something they will defend to the death. (there is even a videa about a guy who has the perfect girlfriend - except that she hate Firefly so he HAS to dump her) I agree with you that it's a perfectly self contained bit of entertainment that didn't have a chance to get crappy. I still have the comics but I am saving them until one more trip through the TV episodes. I am actually really happy for you. Like knowing a friend got exactly what he wanted for Christmas and didn't even know it.

  4. Kal: Yeah, I was getting nervous after a few episodes, thinking "Well, it's cool and all, but I just don't get it.

    And then it was just like "Ah! Now I get it! I think I love these damn characters!"

    And maybe I can enjoy it a little more, knowing it is finite, to a point. Not worrying, I guess, about it being renewed or not.

  9. Hi Caffeinated Joe,
    I've popped over here from Kal's site because I'm also a fan of FF and he mentioned this blog in one of his posts about it. Anyway I'm glad you're leaving Serenity to last as it follows chronologically from the TV shows. I haven't heard of the comics though (NZ can be a bit of a backwater) - is there a website you know of where I could get into them?
    Cheers, Sez

  10. Sez: I have no clue about a website to view the comics. Maybe Kal would have some info on that. And yeah, love the show and sad it had such a short life!
