Dexter is the creation of author Jeff Lindsay in his 2004 novel "Darkly Dreaming Dexter".
In a nutshell, Dexter is a forensic blood spatter analysis expert with the Miami-Metro Police. In his free time, he is a serial killer. The twist with Dexter is that, at a young age, his adoptive father realized that something was off about the boy. He decided to do what he could to help Dexter live his life, yet stay in control of his inner urges. He persuaded the boy to follow a code of ethics which allowed him to pursue his 'needs' by killing only those who deserved to be killed.
Dark, creepy, but highly entertaining stuff.
Lindsay followed up the first novel with three more: Dearly Devoted Dexter (2005), Dexter in the Dark (2007) and Dexter by Design (2009).
The books are great, Lindsay has crafted not only a realistically gritty world, but also a serial killer who we can somehow sypathize with.
Makes for quite interesting reading.

The Showtime television series "Dexter", is based on the books, and the first season is semi-true to the first book.
It has since ventured off on its own path, making for a different, yet equally intriguing, take on the characters.
Michael C. Hall is an incredible actor, bringing Dexter to life, whether it is his love of his job or his struggle to create a family life as a cover for his true self - his 'Dark Passenger' inside.
The show has a Dexter Facebook Fan Page

Starting tomorrow, Showtime is also introducing an animated webisode series, the 12-part "Dexter: Early Cuts".
From the preview below, it looks to be a great addition to the mythos:
The twelve-part series is told in four, one to two minute chapters, and will premiere on Sunday, October 25 on www.sho.com.

Wow--I did a double take when I saw my piece here. :)
ReplyDeleteI enjoy Dexter quite a bit, despite its griiiiim subject matter. Michael Hall can do anything!
I havent had the chance to read any of the books, but the series is phenomenal. I was worried that it was headed downhill already after the second season, but season 3 may have been one of the most intense TV seasons I have ever seen. Ever. Thanks for showing Dexter some love!
