Great Scenes #4 - Night of the Living Dead

Great Scene #4 is from the beginning of the 1968 George Romero classic,
Night of the Living Dead.

What do I love? Well, the line from Johnny to his sister is a classic, of course: "They're coming to get you, Barbara!" Simple line, but sends shivers down my spine still.

And the fact that the zombie is already there, in the background of the scene, ever so slowly making his way closer and closer to the siblings. Quite creepy!

This zombie is played perfectly, I think. He almost tip-toes on his feet as he stumbles around, like walking is no longer something he does well or with thought. And the way he fights Johnny and attacks the car with Barbara inside. Just not very human-like in his actions, making it unnerving.

We know, from this scene on, that things are never going to be the same in this world.

Movie Monday: The Dead and the Damned

Been a while, but here's a review of a new film:

The Dead and the Damned (2010)

Information from the film company itself:

"It's Dawn of the Dead meets High Noon in the bloody, action-packed film The Dead and the Damned, on DVD July 26 from Inception Media Group.

Hot on the trail of a renegade Apache warrior, gun-slinging bounty hunter Mortimer passes through an 1849 California gold rush town, where local miners direct him into the mountains to track his prey.

While he is gone, the miners unearth a meteor that has landed in their sleepy town. As they crack it open, an explosion releases toxic spores, which quickly infect the entire population, transforming them into bloody-thirsty, mutant zombies.

Following a ferocious battle, Mortimer triumphantly returns to town with his Indian captive in shackles... only to find themselves surrounded by a ravenous horde of the undead. Now the two enemies must band together if they are to escape the horrors of The Dead and the Damned!"

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Okay. First off, I was wary going into this one. So many of these screeners turn out to be... Well, to put it nicely, "not good". I was expecting more of the same.
And, in some ways, that's what I got, but not like I thought. This film is surprisingly well produced. The shots look good and the film appears to be one of the gap movies - as in, not crap, but not theater-worthy, either.
The problem lies in the story itself. It is not as "action-packed" as it claims to be. A lot of the scenes are just dull. And the characters have no depth, even with scenes that bring the bore quotient even higher as the two leads explain their complicated pasts.
Another problem is the main actor, David A. Lockhart. He has the leading-man good looks but his voice and line delivery fall way short of leading-man great. He seems better suited for a period drama than an action movie.
Overall, I wasn't turned off by the film being as bad as I expected. Rather, I was just bored. And when you have a movie about "Cowboys and Zombies" (a title the film is also known as, obviously to cash in on the recent Cowboys and Aliens), boredom is something that should never come up.
The Dead and the Damned is written and directed by Rene Perez.
It stars David A. Lockhart, Rick Mora, Camille Montgomery and Robert Amstler.
Available from Inception Media Group.
Dr. Dale's Zombie Dictionary: The A-Z Guide to Staying Alive
Zombie Dictionary
I was sent a copy of Dr. Dale's Zombie Dictionary: The A-Z Guide to Staying Alive, (which is a spin-off from the show, to read and review here.
At first, I was a tad reluctant. Zombies aren't my favorite horror genre, and I felt my opinion of the book would be jaded for that reason.
I am very happy to admit I was quite wrong!
The Dictionary, written by Dr. Dale Seslick and illustrated by Jack Knight, is just great - hilarious and fun - while being a real guide to what one should do to prepare for a zombie outbreak. That may sound silly, but hey - why not be prepared for any eventuality and have some fun whilst learning to do so?
The dictionary admirably attempts to cover any and all situations which should arrive once the dead walk again. Where to hide and where not to; when to fight and when not to; who to trust and who not to. From cover to cover, the book is just an easy, enjoyable read and you can't ask for any more than that!
An excerpt:
ESPRESSO:
Caffeine taken in excess is thought to induce blurred vision, dizziness, insomnia, anxiety and fruity breath to name but a few of the symptoms. However, I simply cannot envisage waking up in the morning with a mob of undead to dispose of without a double espresso to get the motor running. Seeing as I will have to forego most other pleasures in life whilst my dead relatives plunder the earth I am not giving up coffee. And whilst I understand that eventually my supplies will run out, woe betide the person who has to face me in the morning to explain that there are no more beans - and heaven help them if they offer me tea instead!
At least there'll be a lot of zombies annihilated that day. Which is never a bad thing...
That doesn't mean that anyone surviving alongside me should pretend there's no coffee just to get me angry - just the thought upsets me!
I need a coffee - now!
Hollywood is Dead
The always great website The Retroist led me to these zombified works of art:
Awesome!
The site is Hollywood is Dead.
Here is what the site says about itself:
This collection of re-imagined movie posters is brainchild of notorious artist Matt Busch.  Each HOLLYWOOD IS DEAD poster parody is faithfully recreated by Busch’s ability to adapt any painting style thrown his way.  As opposed to just taking the original posters and altering them digitally in PhotoShop, Busch has painstakingly hand-painted every detail with traditional mixed media, before slaughtering them with a zombified treatment.
Head on over for many more and even a blog!
Some posters look more interesting than the film they are parodying!
Walking Dead Trailer
Here is the trailer for the upcoming AMC series The Walking Dead:
Looks pretty good. And the fact that AMC is close to giving the green light to a second season - before the first season even airs - gives me encouragement that it will be worth my while to tune in.
The Walking Dead premieres on AMC on Halloween night.
