You Drink Too Much Coffee When...

Thought this was funny, even if I don't think there is such a thing as "too much" coffee.

You’re Drinking Too Much Coffee When:

You ski uphill.
You speed walk in your sleep.
You answer the door before people knock.
You sleep with your eyes open.
You just completed your third sweater today,
and you don’t know how to knit.
You grind your coffee beans in your mouth.
You have to watch videos in fast-forward.
The only time you’re standing still is in an earthquake.
You lick your coffee pot clean.
Your eyes stay open when you sneeze.
The nurse needs a scientific calculator to take your pulse.
You can type sixty words a minute with your feet.
You don’t sweat, you percolate.
People get dizzy just watching you.
People can test their batteries in your ears.
Your birthday is a national holiday in Brazil.
Your Thermos is on wheels.
You can outlast the Energizer Bunny.
You don’t even wait for the water to boil anymore.
You don’t tan, you roast.
You soak your dentures in coffee overnight.
You think CPR stands for “Coffee Provides Resuscitation.”

My thoughts.

I was reading a post today from someone who was asking if others sometimes felt like things were pointless. Not depressingly so, just a “what’s the point?” sort of feeling. I wrote back the following:
I totally understand your feeling. Sometimes, I think we all feel that way. But I know for sure I do. I am an atheist and sometimes, when times are tough, I feel like what is the point of it all. I don’t believe there is a ‘higher being’ or that there is a purpose to existence. I consider it all a happy accident. But, then I wonder if awareness was the worst thing evolution gave humans. We could have just been blissfully ignorant, like the rest of the creatures on Earth. Instead, we sit and wonder why.
Then I think more and turn it around. A quote I heard once helped. “You are the universe experiencing itself.” I don’t take this as the universe being “aware”, but I do like the idea that, if it weren’t for us, this would all go on unnoticed, so to speak. So, we get to use our eyes and experience to look around and marvel at the wonders, lament the sadness and just experience life. We will be gone one day, but we have to hope, in some small, almost infinitesimal way, we made things a little better for others. Or we some how document what we see and feel, through writing or art or something.
At worst, it just means we were briefly here, enjoying the wonder of that happy accident. At best, we make it better for those yet to open their eyes.
My thoughts.

Pollyanna

I have posted about this topic before, way back in 2009. If you want to read that post, which I still stand behind, however naive or unrealistic it may be, go here: 100th Post and Some Thoughts

Anyway, today is election day. If you are anything like me, you are sick of the political ads and rants and everything. As it got closer and closer to the election, the ads got less focused on what the candidate would do or try to do and became more and more pure mudslinging. Ugh.

Brought to mind that old post and this clip from Knots Landing:

I know. I still have the same simplistic hope:
A World Where We Can All Get Along.

Maybe someday.

Go vote.

F13:TS 25 - Why the show is important to me.

As part of my 25th anniversary celebration for
Friday the 13th: The Series, I thought it
would be good to explain why this show
is so important to me.

I am not writing this to whine or elicit sympathy. I merely wish to put into perspective why I bonded with this show. I am in a much better place in my life now than I was 25 years ago. Really!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The show premiered in the Fall of 1987, when I had just entered my junior year of high school. My experience there was not good and it coincided with major home issues, involving a bitter family war zone and my sister's mental problems, and it all culminated in my parents divorce and my younger brother moving out with my father.
Now, I had some friends in elementary school and middle school, but after I entered high school, things changed. I had a cousin I was close to, but she didn't stay in school long. In my junior year, my brother entered as a freshman. We were close, but I knew he had a good group of his own friends and I didn't want to ostracize him from them and put him into the same near-solitude I had entered, so I kept my distance. For four years, I was a loner there, save for one friend from middle school who remained a friend throughout high school, but who, like my brother, also had her own friends.
Those four years I spent a lot of time alone, even though I was surrounded by hundreds of other teenagers. I just never fit in with any group. I sat at lunch alone, never eating, just reading, writing or doing homework. In any free time, I tried to just disappear into the masses so as to not bring attention to myself. Having other kids become aware of me invariably led to bullying. Back then, I justified others mocking me as my problem, since they were all 'normal'. It was just normal for them to point out my weirdness, and I just had to live with it and get through those long four years.
Loneliness is never fun. I am glad for my younger brother and my one friend, and my dog, for they helped me get through those years more than they realize. But, as I said, I ended up spending a lot of time alone. In the Fall of 87, I was laying in bed late one Saturday night, staying up for the premiere of this new show that had intrigued me, Friday the 13th: The Series.
I had no clue what to expect, but I assumed we would see Jason Voorhees in some form. Remember, there was no internet then to give us every bit of news and each plot point before the show saw the light of day. Back then you mostly had to wait until you actually watched the show.
What we got instead of Jason was the story of three people, strangers to each other, who were forced to live together and put their lives on the line each week. Evil had been unleashed on the world and they knew that if they didn't do all they could to stop it, no one else would.
Over the first two years, these characters grew, matured and formed a small family of their own, just the three of them. And I tuned in each and every week, vicariously living their adventures with them. I know, this may sound silly or vapid or even pathetic, but back then, it meant so much to me to have this show to look forward to at the end of every week. The long days of hiding in plain sight at high school were made bearable knowing I could visit Curious Goods and see Ryan, Micki and Jack on Saturday night.
Obviously, this connection helped me to bond with a short-lived, syndicated show in a way that might seem strange to others. But, there it is. These three people were my small group of friends, apart from any people or place I knew or dealt with in my real life. They were a safe haven that I cherished.
With the start of the show's third season, the show's dynamic changed with the loss of Ryan and the introduction of Johnny. This major change paralleled the changes happening in my life. I had graduated in June and was now working the graveyard shift. I wasn't able to catch the show every week and I felt a distance forming. At the end of that year, the show was cancelled. These friends weren't there every weekend. But, surprising to me, I began to make friends with some of the people I worked with. People who liked me for me.
Life went on, but I never lost the affection I felt for this show. To this day, watching an episode brings me back to a time in my life when reality wasn't great, but for one hour a week, a small black-and-white television transported me to happier place, and I will be forever grateful.
Another One Bites the Dust
Here it is, December 1st yet again and where have I been all November?
Completing yet another NaNoWriMo!
Yup, I made it over 50,000 words and wrote a novel. Sadly, this novel isn't one I am particularly proud of. The damn story just got away from me. Luckily, it is fanfic, a story dealing with my version of what happened after Halloween 2 and before Halloween 4. Yeah, I know, a tale told many a time by many a fan, but hey, it is my version, as creaky as it turned out.
The important part is I did it.
Another year, another NaNoWriMo successfully accomplished.
Also, as an added bonus this year, my two youngest kids (ages 15 and 13) also completed 50,000 plus word novels of their own! I am very proud of them for even attempting it, much less completing it! Kudos to you both!
Now, on to Christmastime!
Happy Holidays everyone!
Costume Help & Wallpaper
Ran out of time to have a post ready last night,
since my youngest broke his leg in his soccer game.
He is in a splint until we see the doc again next week, and then it'll be in a cast.
He was going to go as Dwight Schrute from The Office for Halloween,
but with a cast on, he is going to need a new costume.
I suggested Professor Xavier from X-Men, but he didn't seem keen on that idea.
Anyone else have an idea that incorporates a broken leg into the costume?
I didn't want to skip a day in the
Countdown to Halloween completely,
so here is a desktop wallpaper I made a few years ago.
The pics I used are Michael Myers from Halloween,
Jason Voorhees from Friday the 13th
and Micki, Ryan and Jack from Friday the 13th: The Series.
I believe I made this using Scrapblog.com.
Ideas?
October is fast approaching, and as usual I am planning a month of Halloween/horror related posts.
Also, I am once again taking part in the great Countdown to Halloween.
My request here is for ideas. Anything you all want to see?
A particular movie? Show? Book? Costume? Character?
Drop some thoughts in the comments. Will see what I can make out of them!
And thanks!
Books in Waiting
Okay, I like to read. And I read eclectic stuff, whatever interests me at the moment. Usually fiction, as I love delving into new worlds, or continuing stories of other worlds and beloved characters.
I asked my daughter to take a picture of the shelf I have with books waiting to be read. I have all these, plus about five or six more upstairs.
~ click to enlarge, if you're bored ~
So, as you can see, some interesting stories waiting to be read. A Clive Barker book I have had for years that is just so long, and his writing can be daunting. But I will give it a go one day.
Also have some Final Destination books, Supernatural books, Robert Frost's book of Poems, book about classic game shows, Great Expectations from Dickens, a Murder, She Wrote novel. I could go on, but you get the gist. Lots to read.
Not a problem, mind you. Just sharing. Paperbackswap.com has been a great place for someone like me. I am able to unload old reads I don't mind parting with, books that others are looking to delve into. And in their place, I use the credit to get yet another book I am dying to read. Or, at least for now, add to my shelf.
Currently, I am reading The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson. I have loved the movie for years and the book is great. Eleanor is a fascinating character.
Oh, and in the picture, on the left, are pics of my daughter and youngest son from several years ago, as well as a statue of one of the Wild Things.
Hope I didn't bore you with this little glimpse into my life.
Like No One is Following...
I reblogged this pic over at my tumblr site (Another Cup of... Caffeinated Joe),
but thought it was worth sharing here, as well:
Obviously made about Twitter, it also works for blogging, whether here or at tumblr.
Do it for yourself, not for the follows or the comments or the reblogs.
Gotta enjoy it yourself or really, what's the point?
It doesn't take long...
I have learned that it doesn't take long for someone or something to make its way into your heart.
For almost a year, I have been spending a few hours a week with a friend's two dogs, Diego and Eva. We have played and walked together, and I have come to enjoy spending time with both of them.
The dogs are siblings, although Diego was 7 and Eva just a puppy when I met them. He was always patient and forgiving of his younger sister, who is full of energy and excitement. When he felt like rough-housing, he would let her "attack" him, and he would fight back, but I never once heard her whine in pain. He fought gently, teaching her in his own way, I suppose.
Monday night I received a text from their owner: Diego had been hit by a car. Blood was everywhere, he had at least a broken leg and they were rushing to the local animal hospital.
The next text I received was that Diego had died.
Needless to say, I was shocked. I was just not prepared for either his sudden death or the fact that I had grown so fond of this dog. I still find myself shaking my head at the realization that he's gone.
But, I am glad I got to know him, even if it was for a brief time. He was the epitome of the old idiom "Don't judge a book by its cover." Diego was stern looking and his bark intimidating, but inside was a gentle, kind dog with a big heart.
He will be missed.
I am very much looking forward to the new TLC series "Extreme Couponing".
Here's a clip from the special that aired earlier this year:
Dress Rehearsals
Often when you are anticipating, or dreading, a future moment in your life, you act out the coming scenes in your head. Usually over and over again.
And in these scenes, you want to be the hero, the person doing the right thing, for the right reasons, with perfect ease and no errors.
But in reality life doesn't work that way.
This world is made up of many actors, all trying to be the stars of our own dramas. Yet we are also the co-stars, character actors and bit players in the stories of others.
And as we get older, and perhaps wiser, we slowly learn this fact. So when we start doing dress rehearsals in our heads, we begin to play them in a more realistic light.
We won't always be the hero. More often than not, we will just be 'that guy'.
We won't always say what we want to say, because other people get in the way, with either their words or their emotions.
Each time, over the years, the scenes we play out beforehand resemble the eventual truth ever more.
We become jaded, or cynical. Practical or accepting, in more positive words.
I suppose, when we have it almost perfected, the credits roll.
Crossroads
Last week I did a post of one of Shakespeare's Sonnets. I have been reading them lately, and am subscribing to all 154 of them through DailyLit. Felt like sharing it.
And that is what brings me to this blog title: Crossroads. I haven't posted here since New Year's, except for a cartoon and the sonnet. I have felt like this blog lost its purpose, for me. Why? I am not sure.
Part of it might be the Horror road I went onto here. I never intended for this blog to be just a horror blog. I had originally intended this blog to just be, well, whatever I felt like posting. Here is what I originally posted when I started this blog:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

So, I will post what I want, when I want and how I want. I won't ask anyone to read it or comment on it or care about it.

I will at least be getting some flotsam and jetsam out of my head. Maybe I can help my writing, find some ideas for stories, articles - whatever. But it will all be just for me.

Feel free to read, or not. Feel free to share, or not. Enjoy it, or not.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I don't want to just close up shop here, so I am going to try and get back to that mindset. My blog, my space, I will post whatever.
Let's hope it works. And thanks to those who didn't delete me when things got quiet in these parts.
It is appreciated.
End of 2010
Okay, so I want (wanted) to lose some weight this year, to get in better shape.
I wrote this part of this post on January 1st, 2010:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Here it is, the start of a whole new year. A whole new decade, to some. And here I am, still overweight and regretting the fact that I wasn't better at trying to do something about it.

My weight, as of 1/1/2010 is 214.2 pounds. Not good, for my height!

So, let's see if I can do it this year. What weight do I want to get to?

Well, for my height, build and sex, an 'ideal weight' is somewhere between 142 and 148. Not sure if that is reasonable for me, since I have always been a bit stocky (or husky, if you want to go with the lovely 70s/80s term I dreaded when shopping for clothes).

So, I will aim for 160 pounds. Any more than that will be a big bonus. But that sounds good to me. What that means is I have one year to try and lose 54.2 pounds.

Wow. Okay, well I can do it, right? Time will tell. I will leave this post sitting in the draft bin here, and will not check it or update it until December 30th, 2010. I will add what the year has been like for me, exercise- and weight-wise, and what my weight is then.

I hope I can do it this year!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
And here is what I added to this post on December 30, 2010:
HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
Okay, joking aside I did lose some weight.
Last week, the scale said 199.something. Today it was 203.8.
Not down to 160.
But I did exercise more, in the form of walking with our two dogs almost every single day. So, while I didn't lose what I planned to lose, I am not that upset over it. I am healthy, my doc is happy with what I am doing and I am okay with who I am, definitely more so now than I was this time last year.
Here's to more walking and staying healthy!
And a happy & healthy 2011 to all of you, too!
Halloween 13 Meme
13
SamuraiFrog @ Electronic Cerebrectomy posted this and I thought it would be fun to play along!
1. What is the worst treat to get when trick-or-treating?
Any loose candy, like unwrapped or even barely wrapped. Why?
2. What character from any horror film would you most like to play?
Jason Voorhees, I guess.
3. Would you rather be a zombie, alien, or psycho? (why)
Zombie would be easier, I suppose, but a psycho would be more challenging.
4. How many Halloween, Friday the 13th, or Nightmare on Elm Street movies combined do you have on dvd?
All of them, actually. Well, I don't have the Rob Zombie remakes (bleh) or the new Nightmare on Elm Street (but I supposedly won it, so that may change). And some, like the F13 movies, I have in different versions. And I have like 3 versions of Carpenter's Halloween. It is my favorite movie of all.
5. What is the scariest movie you have ever seen?
The original Halloween still has the ability to leave me unsettled. Calvaire is one that totally freaked me out.
6. Lamest costume you have worn on Halloween?
As I have gotten older, I have just worn horror t-shirts, usually. The lamest may be when I went in drag. Not a good look.
7. Favorite Halloween treat?
Pumpkin pie is good, but I usually have that around Thanksgiving. Maybe the Reeses' Peanut Butter Pumpkins or the Monster Cereals.
8. Friendly-faced jack o’lantern or scary one?
Scary.
9. Have you ever had nightmares about a scary movie character chasing you?
Yup. Michael Myers. And I still go back and watch again and again.
10. Best thing about Halloween?
What's not to like? The air is crisp, not too cold but not to hot. The television is filled with creepy flicks, some you never get to see at any other time of year. Homes are decorated in spooky and wonderful ways. Pumpkins abound and candy is plentiful. All good!
11. Strangest Halloween custom you’ve heard of?
What I find strange is people celebrating Halloween days ahead of time, to not scare their kids or whatever. What? It is HALLOWEEN, people!
12. Person in your family who most likes Halloween (not counting yourself)?
I guess my daughter. She loves the same aspects I do, except for the scary movies.
13. Are you superstitious? If so, name at least one superstition of yours.
No, don't believe any of it is real. All good for fun and merriment, but that's where it ends.
The Coffee Cup Analogy
A group of alumni, highly established in their careers, got together to visit their old university lecturer. Conversation soon turned into complaints about stress in work and life.
Offering his guests coffee, the lecturer went to the kitchen and returned with a large pot of coffee and an assortment of cups: porcelain, plastic, glass, some plain-looking and some expensive and exquisite, telling them to help themselves to hot coffee.
When all the students had a cup of coffee in hand, the lecturer said: “If you noticed, all the nice-looking, expensive cups were taken up, leaving behind the plain and cheap ones. While it is normal for you to want only the best for yourselves, that is the source of your problems and stress. What all of you really wanted was coffee, not the cup, but you consciously went for the better cups and are eyeing each other’s cups.”
“Now, if Life is coffee, then the jobs, money and position in society are the cups. They are just tools to hold and contain Life, but the quality of Life doesn’t change. Sometimes, by concentrating only on the cup, we fail to enjoy the coffee in it.”
So please, don’t let the cups drive you…enjoy the coffee instead.
