Sunday Funny - The Graevsytes
Last week's Sunday Funny was Non Sequitur.
For Halloween Month, I am showcasing one of the families who occasionally appear in that strip, The Graevsytes.

The Graevsytes were introduced on September 8, 2002, and bear similarities to The Addams Family. They also appeared in Danae's Halloween series in October and November 2002.
In the Non Sequitur Sunday Color Treasury, Wiley Miller said he decided to stop using them after some violent images came out of Iraq. He left the door open for future appearances. They reappeared on October 1, 2006.
The family is made up of father Horace, who carries his head on a plate; mother Miranda, who floats around the house; teenage son Boyle, who bears some resemblance to Jason Voorhees from the Friday the 13th films; a daughter Mimi; and a baby in a bird cage named Ira.

Sunday Funny - Non Sequitur

Non Sequitur is a strip that offers quite a variety: Sometimes, it is a just a one-off panel, as in the one above. Other times it features the lives of the characters living in Whatchacallit, Maine, including The Pyles (Joe, his daughters Danae and Kate, his mother, waitress Flo and his brother Bob, an attorney), Captain Eddie and Danae's pet horse, Lucy.
Other times the strip highlights the superhero Obviousman; young adventurer Ordinary Basil; Homer, who has been reincarnated over and over again; the French-Canadian Pierre of the North and many more.
An Addams Family-like clan called The Graevsytes will be spotlighted here next week, as part of Halloween Month.

Sunday Funny - Dean's Comic Booth
This week I am featuring a different site: Dean's Comic Booth.
At this site, a comic strip or panel is take and altered, usually in a 'not-safe-for-work' way. I have been searching the site for a few weeks to find one that was remotely re-postable for this blog.
I finally found one that is okay. Creepy and strange, but safe enough.
Here is the original, a Dennis the Menace panel:

See? Dark and creepy, but I enjoy it.

Sunday Funny - Zits
This week's strip is Zits, which is written by Jerry Scott and illustrated by Jim Borgman.
Zits revolves around the life of 16-year-old Jeremy Duncan and his family and friends. Teenage life is the main focus of the strip, whether it is how Jeremy views the world or how the world views him and his friends.

The strip is usually good for a chuckle and, more often than not, has people seeing someone they know (or themselves) in the characters and their exaggerated actions.

Sunday Funny - Red and Rover
This week's funny is a syndicated comic called Red and Rover, by Brian Basset.

Red is a 10-year-old boy whose best friend is his dog, Rover. The two can understand what each other is saying or thinking.
The strip mainly deals with life as it affects these two.

Occasionally seen in the strip is Red's family (his older brother Martin and their parents Carol and Charlie) and Red's friends and neighbors.

Sunday Funny - Close to Home
This week's strip is Close to Home by John McPherson.
It is a one-panel strip, with no recurring characters. Rather it is done in the style of the much-missed The Far Side with each comic being just a random joke or musing on something weird about life.

I would pass out myself at the sight of a needle like that!

Sunday Funny - Garfield

I have wanted to use Garfield for a Sunday Funny post, but more often than not these days, the strip is only mildly funny. While it has never been a rip-roaring comic, I remember when I used to get more chuckles out of it.

Sunday Funny - Garfield Minus Garfield
This week's comic strip is "Garfield Minus Garfield", a funny take on the long-running classic "Garfield".
Dan Walsh takes original strips by Jim Davis and removes the title cat completely. The results are sometimes hilarious, often odd, and occasionally sad.

As you can see, it can be absurd, and Jon Arbuckle can be very sad when not being mocked by his pet cat.
Davis himself is a bit of a fan, saying the idea is "inspired" and thanking Walsh for letting him see a different side to Garfield. Awesome that he is so cool about it!

And it made me think of this man and his wife, who made the news earlier this month:
A renowned British conductor and his wife have died in the assisted suicide clinic Dignitas, their family said.
Sir Edward Downes, 85, was almost blind when he and his 74-year-old wife Joan travelled to Switzerland to end their lives, a family statement released to the BBC said.
...
The statement, released by their son and daughter, Caractacus and Boudicca, said the couple died on July 10 "under circumstances of their own choosing" after a struggle with serious health problems.
It said: "After 54 happy years together they decided to end their own lives rather than continue to struggle with serious health problems.
"They died peacefully and under circumstances of their own choosing, with the help of the Swiss organisation Dignitas in Zurich."

I hope I have that freedom, when my time comes.
I want to make that choice for my own life and it's end. I want to be able to decide if I have had enough. And I hope that my family is as supportive as the children mentioned above.
I want to decide when my time is up. Not someone else who wants to push their views or beliefs onto everyone else.
In the future, I hope this becomes legal in the USA and that we would have this choice in my own country.
But, if need be, I will be more than happy to take a nice, final flight to Switzerland.

The Comics Curmudgeon run by Josh, is a daily look at the comics page with commentary on some of the more absurd things therein.
Josh pokes fun at the strips, but it is done with a love for the material, as well.

Sunday Funny - Leroy Lockhorn Appreciation Society
Thought I would do something a little different today. Instead of showcasing a comic strip, I am going to mention a blog that focus on a comic strip.
The Leroy Lockhorn Appreciation Society

This feature was started by Mr. Beautiful on his Mister Beautiful blog. He has recently moved the premise to a blog of it's own.
He showcases each day's "The Lockhorns" comic panel and offers some theories as to what is going on in the minds of Leroy, his wife Loretta and their "friends" and neighbors.
Leroy and Loretta have a uniquely passive-aggressive relationship. And they seemed trapped together in their weird world, which sometimes verges on a total void. The strip needs someone like Mr. Beautiful to ponder the insane depths of the characters and their motives.
Since this is a new blog, there aren't many followers. And that needs to change, so click on over and check it out. Leroy needs the support!

My kids insist I am wrong, but this could be a snapshot of a moment at our house. In fact, many times over the years, we have seen our family experiences mirrored in the antics of the MacPherson family! Great to be able to laugh at the characters, and in turn, ourselves.
Baby Blues, a strip about two parents, their three kids and assorted family and friends, has been around since early 1990, and is now internationally syndicated. There have been over 20 books published collecting the comic strips, and there was even an animated cartoon for a brief time in 2000.
